Austin Atkinson is a multi-instrumentalist, music educator, and producer based in the Cincinnati area. His teaching focuses on guitar, piano, and saxophone, and his students regularly go on to perform in select ensembles such as Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble, KY & OH All State & Select Bands, and prepared and improvised solos in live performances. Since starting his private teaching studio in 2015 he has worked with several band programs and music stores in southern Ohio and northern Kentucky, with experience in individual, small group and large group instruction, marching band camps, instrument fittings, and concert sound engineering. Austin’s performance experience includes community events and wedding performances in both classical and jazz settings, producing and self-recording rock, jazz and folk music at his home studio, plus public concerts and in-studio recording with his experimental saxophone quartet Shredtet (which has the distinction of being the only musical act chosen to perform alongside the headliner at Curveball Festival in 2018). He is comfortable teaching students of any age and skill level the fundamentals of reading music; strumming, fingering, barring and fingerpicking on guitar, ukulele and banjo; playing popular songs using chord progressions on any instrument; jazz accompaniment on guitar and piano; and performing classical and jazz music on woodwind instruments. Music lessons for all instruments will delve into scales and music theory, standard folk songs, popular and jazz tunes, classical performance, and improvisation, based on students’ individual goals and needs.
