Multiple Drag modes produce surprisingly musical ambient effects
The way the delay and reverb interact within the Afterneath V3 effects pedal is rather esoteric, spending some time simply turning knobs and exploring different settings. When you set the Reflect and Length parameters to high levels, self-oscillation occurs, and you can use the Drag parameter to tweak the pitch of the oscillation. The Mode control directs the behavior of the Drag control, with nine different modes available.
Available Drag modes for manipulating self-oscillation:
- Unquantized — allows a smooth pitch change over the range of the Drag control
- Unquantized with Slew — similar to the Unquantized mode, but with a short lag behind knob/CV changes
- Unquantized Volt/Octave — smooth, unquantized pitch changes, but scaled to align to a 1V/Oct curve for easier melodic manipulation
- Chromatic Scale — quantized to 1V/Oct, adjusting Drag changes between intervals of the Chromatic scale
- Major Scale — quantized to 1V/Oct, adjusting Drag changes between intervals of the Major scale
- Minor Scale — quantized to 1V/Oct, adjusting Drag changes between intervals of the Minor scale
- Pentatonic Scale — quantized to 1V/Oct, adjusting Drag changes between intervals of the Pentatonic scale
- Octaves and Fifths — quantized to 1V/Oct, adjusting Drag changes between octaves and fifths of the original pitch
- Octaves — quantized to 1V/Oct, adjusting Drag changes between octaves of the original pitch
